Caledonia is a village in Caledonia Township which is located in the southeastern portion of Kent county, approximately 30 miles from the city of Grand Rapids, Michigan. The village is 1.4 square miles and has a population of 1102 according to the 2000 census.
As a finalist for the top "100 Best Places to Live 2005," Caledonia, a suburb of Grand Rapids is a shining star in several categories. The median home price is half of the average of the 100 Best Places to Live. The "air pollution index" is lower as well, and the "personal crime risk" and "property crime risk" are much lower than the average of all the other finalists. Caledonia's award-winning schools complete the package for this desirable community of under 15,000 people. As an added bonus, you are only 6-7 miles from Gerald R Ford International Airport.
The first white settler was Asahel Kent who moved from Ohio in 1838. The area grew with the arrival of the railroad until 1870, when a post office and depot were built and named "Caledonia Station." In 1884, the name was changed to Caledonia, with incorporation into a village in 1888.
Once primarily a farming community, Caledonia today is a thriving suburban city of Grand Rapids. Situated in a hilly area on beautiful Emmons Lake, this is an ideal place to live with a balance between country and city.
The Caledonia Community School System has a district which covers 100 square miles, and includes 3 elementary schools, a middle school and a new high school.
